Cut-out Climber

Explorer Scouts

Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth section of the Scouting family after Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Structure and meetings

A group of Explorer Scouts is called a Unit.

Not all Units meet every week, partly due to activities, holidays, exams and the other commitments that crop up in a teenager's life, and also because Explorers tend to get out and about at weekends more often than other sections.

Activities

Explorer Scouts often get the chance to work with other Explorer Scouts in their District, not just their own Unit, so can take part in an even wider spectrum of activities.

There is also a range of ambitious badges and awards, through which Explorers can demonstrate their proficiencies and expand their interests.

Badges and awards

There is a wide range of badges and awards available to young people in the Explorer Section.

Activity badges

Many of the badges available are activity badges, which represent the pinnacle of achievement in a particular field. Whether their interests lie in Hill Walking or Performing Arts, Aviation or Public Relations, Explorers are rewarded both for developing existing strengths and undertaking new ventures.

Additional badges and awards

In addition, there are a number of extra badges and awards, obtained by taking part in particular challenges or schemes.

Core badges

There are a number of core badges, obtained upon joining or moving on from the Unit, or for time spent in the Scouting movement.

Balanced Programme

The philosophy underpinning the Programme is that every Scout should participate in a Balanced Programme over a period of time.

What we offer to young people in the Explorer section is a range of activities, events and experiences built around six Programme Zones.

You balance the programme in the same way you'd balance a diet, by simply ensuring that over a given period (a month or a term, for example), there is something from each zone in the programme.
We deliver the activities across the Programme Zones using a variety of Methods, and the final element of the Balanced Programme for Explorer Scouts is the Bottom Line - a list of things you'd hope to see going on in an ideal meeting.

Be Prepared

Young Leaders' Scheme

The Young Leaders' Scheme is just one of the exciting programme elements in the Explorer Scout section. All leaders in the Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Section who are between the ages of 14 and 18 must be members of an Explorer Scout Young Leaders' Unit. They are Explorer Scouts who choose to devote a large proportion of their time in Scouting to service in another section.

The Young Leaders' Scheme helps Explorer Scouts to develop and grow as individuals. It allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. The scheme also helps them fulfil the service elements of their awards.

Module A Badge

The Young Leader's Module A Badge is awarded after completion of Module A - Prepare for Take Off of the Young Leaders' Scheme. This must be completed within three months of becoming a Young Leader.

Young Leaders' Essentials

Young Leaders' Essentials was developed to help adults, primarily the Explorer Scout Leaders (Young Leader) who will be delivering the scheme, to understand how the training and development aspects of the scheme work.

Young Leaders' Scheme Factsheets

In the Young Leaders' Essentials pack, there are a number of factsheets designed to help Young Leaders themselves progress through the training element of the scheme.

Young Leaders - Information for Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Leaders

Also available is a factsheet called Young Leaders - Information for Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Leaders. This factsheet outlines to section leaders the role that they can expect Young Leaders to play in their leadership team.

Review tool

The review tool will help you to understand the status of the local Young Leader provision locally, using the Red, Amber, Green (RAG) Assessment. It also includes a Development Plan template to help you prioritise your actions and continue to move the scheme forward.
